The Graduate School of Biosphere Science, Hiroshima University, will invite promising undergraduate or graduate students, or young academic staff (less than 35 years old) from MOU universities or other partner universities to participate in the 2017 Hiroshima University International Summer School in Biosphere Science. This summer school aims to share current knowledge and technique on the latest advances in five different scientific programs (please see detail in the table below), and to strengthen and foster good relationships among universities. Participants are also scheduled to visit two World Heritage sites found in Hiroshima, namely Itsukushima Shrine and Atomic Bomb Dome in Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park.
1. Program
i. Scientific program work: this year, the school will offer the following five courses, which will be held concurrently during two whole days. The applicants can select and express an interest for one desired course from the following list (please select 1st, 2nd and 3rd preferred courses).
To optimize educational quality, the organizer will limit the number of participants (maximum 3 persons) in each course, and may assign participants based upon their 2nd or 3rd preferences. The final assignment of courses will be decided by Hiroshima University. After completion of the course, the participant will receive a certification of scientific proficiency.

2. When and Where
When: From 26th July to 1st August, 2017

3. Participants
Undergraduate or graduate students, or young academic staff (less than 35 years old) from MOU universities or other partner universities: Airlangga University (Indonesia), Bogor Agricultural University (Indonesia), Chonnam National University (Korea), Gadjah Mada University (Indonesia), Kasetsart University (Thailand), Khon Kaen University (Thailand), Nong Lam University (Vietnam), Pukyong National University (Korea), Tunghai University (Taiwan), University of Peradeniya (Sri Lanka), University of the Philippines Visayas (Philippines) and Visayas State University (Philippines).
Hiroshima University will particularly give special preference to participants who are seriously considering enrollment at the Graduate School of Biosphere Science in the near future.
4. Financial support
♦The organizer will cover;
– modest accommodation for the summer school period from check-in on 25th July through check-out on 2nd August
– training and laboratory fees
– meals during the party hosted by the Graduate School of Biosphere Science
– travel and amusement charges in visiting the World Heritage sites or institutes
– pickup the participants at Hiroshima Airport (both international and domestic) or at Higashi-Hiroshima Station
*Note: it is strongly recommended to the participants to fly into Hiroshima Airport, which is an international port of entry. However, if there is a difficulty in booking flights to Hiroshima Airport, please consult the organizer first for subsidy of domestic travelling expenses, from Kansai or Fukuoka International Airports, using land-transportations. You should not enter Japan through other airports, like Narita, Haneda, etc.

– cost of international airline tickets
– cost of medical or emergency insurances
– cost for applying Japanese Entry Visas
– daily meal costs, except during the party mentioned above
– any personal and incidental expenses apart from the Summer School activities
5. Certificate of completion
Hiroshima University will issue a certificate of completion of the 10th International Summer School to the participants at the close of the summer school.
6. How to apply
Applicants should submit the application form [Form 2] and academic advisor’s approval [Form 3] to the Dean or office of the applicant’s home university (Office of International Affairs Faculty of Animal Science UGM) by the latest 2 May 2017. The Dean will select and recommend the candidate to Hiroshima University using the recommendation list [Form 1]. If there are several candidates, the Dean will rank each candidate accordingly.
The filled Forms 1,2 and 3 should be sent via e-mail (sei-bucho-sien@office.hiroshima-u.ac.jp) to meet the deadline.
7. Deadline of application
Only nominations made by the Deans and received at Hiroshima University on or before 5th May 2017 will be considered for final selection by Hiroshima University. Please be advised that not all nominations might be selected.
8. Notice of acceptance
Hiroshima University will communicate the final decision of acceptance to the Deans by 19th May 2017. Successful applicants will also be requested to prepare materials necessary for coming to Hiroshima University which will be specified in another communication.
9. Others
Upon acceptance into the 10th International Summer School, the participants should immediately search for the available international flights and communicate such information to the organizer as soon as possible. Hiroshima University will then prepare the necessary supporting documents for Japanese Entry Visa application. These official documents will be issued promptly by Hiroshima University’s office. Please note that the organizer will guarantee the official purpose and intention of the participants only for the duration of the summer school period (25th July to 2nd August), but NOT for any extra travel plans within Japan before or after the summer school period
