RATIONALE

Much have been said about the changing extension landscape brought about by new challenges in agricultural development such as declining water availability, increasing soil degradation, changing and uncertain climate and markets, among others.  As a response, agricultural extension has also undergone changes, becoming more pluralistic with the increasing participation of the private sector, non-governmental organizations; producer groups, cooperatives and associations; consultants; and ICT-based services. All these brought additional manpower and resources for extension and advisory services and also brought new knowledge, skills, and expertise. However, this pluralism also brought additional challenges of ensuring quality, providing technical backstopping, and ensuring collaboration and synergy between diverse extension service providers.

Training Focus

The International Training Program aims to support leaders and extension service providers of agricultural institutions such as government agencies, central/local government units, agricultural science universities, and non-governmental organizations to develop their institution’s strategic engagement in education, research, innovation in agricultural extension and outreach to address the global challenges for agricultural sustainable development. The International Training Program will serve to provide the opportunity of a global meeting of both young and senior extensionists as well as organization leaders to understand and appreciate the challenges and developments in extension  not just at country level but both in the regional and global levels as well.

Objectives/Expected Outcomes

The International Training Program will provide outcomes for action-oriented leadership for change management particularly in the field of agricultural extension and advisory services where participants will be challenged to re-view the role of international and institutional partnerships in support to meeting the Sustainable Development Goals with implications to enhancing their capacities to face the challenges of the New Extension Paradigm.

Target Participants

The International Training Course is open to leaders, managers, and supervisors engaged in extension and agricultural advisory work, and other extension service providers from both government and non-government organizations, academic institutions, and the private sector responsible for planning and implementation of education, research and innovation including others who are responsible for strategic decision making specific to the provision of agricultural extension and advisory services.
